join Oogie McGuire at Desert Weyr, LLC for an introduction to sheep raising.
You will learn what sort of care a sheep needs, how to select the right breed
for you and get some basic info on meat and wool markets. Fencing, regular
vet care, federal identification requirements and more willbe discussed. 3

(Garvin Mesa) Cost: $50 which includes the optional shearing workshop
(below), 3-8 people This
workshop will cover basic toe trimming, Federal ear tagging regulations,
selection for butcher and judging finish on grass fed sheep. WeÕll also
discuss winter condition scoring of sheep and mid pregnancy feeding issues. The
class will be hands-on with participants learning proper foot care for sheep,
when and how to properly tag sheep to meet US federal identification requirements,
a brief discussion of conformation as it relates to meat yields and will get
to look at a range of sheep and select those ready for butcher. We will have
ample time for students to practice toe trimming on a few sheep, ear tag a
few sheep and evaluate sheep. Participants
should dress warmly in clean overalls or other warm clothing and bring clean
disinfected rubber boots. They will also need gloves and hats.

part in shearing 140+ sheep in about 6 hours! Plan
to work during this fast-moving opportunity to see initial fleece grading and
help move sheep. Lunch is provided to those to stay and work the whole day.
